Minister Yolanda Secures Support from Egyptian Counterpart for Healthcare Improvements

5th June, 2024 - In a significant development, the Republic of South Sudan Minister of Health, Hon. Yolanda Awel Deng, met with the Health and Population Minister of Egypt, Hon. Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, at the Africa Health ExCon event in Cairo. The two ministers discussed areas of healthcare collaboration between the two countries.

As a result of the meeting, the ministers agreed to expand hearing services in South Sudan beyond the capital Juba, adding locations in Malakal and Wau. Additionally, the Minister Yolanda requested Egypt's assistance in establishing a facility to house eight dialysis units previously donated by Egypt for Juba Teaching Hospital. The Egyptian government agreed to provide this support.

 

The talks also covered plans to renovate the Akon Medical Clinic in Warrap State, though further details on the scope of the renovation are yet to be announced.

 

Furthermore, the two ministers discussed expanding scholarship opportunities for master’s degree programmes, aimed at enhancing healthcare capacity-building and fostering stronger collaboration between medical professionals in both countries.

 

This partnership represents a significant step forward in improving healthcare outcomes in South Sudan. The meeting demonstrates the commitment of the South Sudanese and Egyptian health ministers to enhancing healthcare services and strengthening the ties between the two nations.
