The National Ministry of Health convened a National Steering Committee meeting today, attended by health partners, to review the ongoing cholera response nationwide.
The latest epidemiological data reveal both significant challenges and promising developments in the outbreak that began in September 2024.
From September 28, 2024, the number of cholera cases has a total of 76,920 and 1,386 deaths, reported by 54 counties in 9 states and the three administrative areas. A total of 73,548 cases (96%) have been successfully treated and discharged, while 1,986 cases are still in admission. The case fatality rate is 1.8% against a target of <1%
In the last 7 days (June 19-25, 2025), a total of 892 cases and six deaths have been reported in 15 counties, with Rubkona and Abyei accounting for 48% and 17% of these cases, respectively.
Western Equatoria State remains cholera-free across all 10 counties, demonstrating the effectiveness of preventive measures, including early water quality interventions and community awareness programs. Health officials cite this evidence that outbreak containment is possible with coordinated preventive action.
The National Steering Committee approved enhanced measures, including:
Mobile treatment units for Rubkona and Abyei regions
Triple-layer water safety initiatives in high-risk counties
Cross-border coordination with neighbouring countries
Community engagement programs targeting CFR reduction
Health Minister Hon. Sarah Cleto Rial, Minister of Health - Republic of South Sudan, emphasized: "While our 96% treatment success rate demonstrates system resilience, the 1.8% CFR requires urgent action. We're deploying rapid response teams to transmission hotspots while maintaining vigilance in unaffected regions."
Partners, including WHO, UNICEF South Sudan, and MSF, reaffirmed their commitments to support case management through the peak of the rainy season.
