Strengthening the Backbone of South Sudan’s Healthcare: World Bank Hosts HSTP Orientation in Juba
JUBA, South Sudan | February 26, 2026 — The journey toward a more resilient and accessible healthcare system in South Sudan took a significant step forward today. The World Bank, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, officially launched a two-day Orientation Workshop for the Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP) Project Management Unit (PMU).
Running from February 26–27, 2026, this intensive training is designed to sharpen the technical and operational expertise of the PMU and key Ministry of Health (MoH) personnel. As the nation moves toward a more integrated health model, these sessions ensure that the teams leading the charge are equipped with the tools necessary for excellence.
Opening the workshop, Dr. John Rumunu, the Director General of Policy and Planning, delivered a compelling charge to the participants. He noted that the HSTP is not just a project, but a "vital roadmap" for the nation's future.
"The HSTP is essential for South Sudan’s resilience," Dr. Rumunu stated. "We have the vision; now, we must have the dedicated teams to transform that vision into reality through integrity, transparency, and a relentless focus on results."
The workshop moves beyond theory, utilizing participatory and interactive methods to foster real-world collaboration. Over the two-day period, participants are diving deep into the core pillars of project success, including:
- Governance & Implementation: Streamlining how decisions are made and executed.
- Fiduciary & Financial Management: Ensuring every resource is tracked and utilized effectively.
- Service Delivery Models: Expanding the basic package of health and nutrition services to the citizens who need them most.
- Environmental & Social Safeguards: Protecting communities and ensuring sustainable growth.
- Risk Management & Monitoring: Building a system that can adapt to challenges in real-time.
The Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP) is a flagship national program implemented by the Ministry of Health with the robust support of the World Bank and other key development partners.
Its primary mission is to strengthen South Sudan’s health system performance. By expanding access to essential health services and improving institutional capacity, the HSTP aims to build a healthcare system that is not only functional but formidable—ensuring health and wellness for all South Sudanese citizens.
