Ministry of Health and World Bank Convene Strategic Mission to Accelerate Health Sector Transformation
JUBA, South Sudan – The Ministry of Health (MoH), in partnership with the World Bank, has launched a high-level Quarter 6 (Q6) Implementation Support Mission (ISM) to review and advance the Health Sector Transformation Project (HSTP).
The mission, which runs from February 4 to February 13, 2026, serves as a critical follow-up to the recent Mid-Term Review (MTR). It brings together technical experts from the MoH, World Bank, UNICEF, and the World Health Organization (WHO), alongside key international donors including Canada, the European Union, the UK’s FCDO, GAVI, and the Global Fund.
The HSTP is South Sudan’s flagship initiative designed to transition the country from emergency humanitarian aid toward a resilient, government-led national health system. This 10-day mission focuses on several high-priority pillars:
Essential Service Delivery: Evaluating the nationwide rollout of the Basic Package of Health and Nutrition Services and monitoring the performance of implementing partners.
Boma Health Initiative (BHI): Assessing the progress of community-based health activities to ensure life-saving care reaches the most remote areas.
Disease Control: Holding "technical deep-dives" into malaria control and the Expanded Programme on Immunization (EPI) to reduce the country’s disease burden.
Resilient Infrastructure: Collaborating with WHO on the rehabilitation of pharmaceutical stores and the delivery of climate-resilient health services.
"This mission is a high-level platform to ensure strict political and financial alignment. Our goal is to ensure the HSTP remains responsive to the evolving needs of our people while building a robust, long-term health system for all South Sudanese." — Ministry of Health Leadership
A vital component of the ISM includes a scheduled field visit later this month. This will allow the delegation of government officials and international partners to witness service delivery firsthand, engage with local health authorities, and identify remaining bottlenecks at the facility level.
As the mission concludes, the joint findings will be used to make critical adjustments to project implementation. These modifications are intended to optimize resources and ensure that essential medicines and quality care remain accessible, even amidst a challenging humanitarian landscape.
